have you ever gotten cramps in the iddle of the night in your legs arms ect or after a sporting event?
most cramps are due to two factors either a water/ electrolyte imbalance or a magnesium deficiency. you cant overdose on magnesium, the best way to find your correct dosage is to take one, the first day, and keep upping the dosage each day until you essentially have diarhea, then back down one pill.

I get those, generally it's rectified when I add a lil bit more salt to my diet. I'm usually overly conscious of salt and prepare most food from fresh, so I don't always get as much as one needs.

Usually dehydration for me. Especially after I have been working out a lot. But these days I get paranoid about cramps in my calves. Had one that would happen off and on for years in my left calf. People told me to drink more water, magnesium, eat bananas and all. But it never got better. Eventually it went away, then I felt a side stitch in my right lung. Turned out it was a blood clot. Good times.
At least the coumadin blood thinners I need to take makes me attractive to sanguines now :0

For me it's usually dehydration but I have a pretty muscular lower body so it's sometimes caused by spasms and such which truly sucks.

An old coaching trick for this is to eat a packet of mustard (like you get from a fast-food restaurant for your hamburger) followed by a glass of gatorade (or water if no gatorade is available). It sounds crazy, but it restores electrolytes very quickly.
Cramping can also occur because of poor flexibility of the muscle. Stretch, stretch, stretch!!!! (Stretching hydrates your muscles!!!)

Actually when you get those craps it means your not getting enough potassium in your diet. Pinch the skin between your nostrils hard until it goes away in a few seconds. Its an old wives cure that works. -Myr

I'm pretty sure that most people eat too much salt and this throws off the osmotic balance in just about everyone, especially when people don't get enough potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Going through a lot of caffeine and therefore water too really exacerbates that. My mom, a registered nurse, thinks my theory is garbage. But I'm not so sure. Regardless, I try to get as much K, Ca, and Mg, and minimize Na.

Stretch, stretch, stretch!!!! thats actually a sign i posted on my cieling, so its the first thing i see when i wake up... unfortunately unlike cats we dont seem to instincutally do it the first thing getting out of bed. i swear by magnesium, if its not dehydration... have you ever noticed when you've had stomach cramps for instance, you take "mylanta" or "milk of magnesi-a/um" and it works?

just a note..milk of magnesia is not the same as drinking milk obviously...actually if you have cramps dairy milk is the worst thing to drink. While magnesium relaxes mucles, calcium contracts muscles.

The lifestyle clinic I work with recommends a Calcium/Magnesium blend to remedy muscle cramping. Myrbree is correct in that Potassium is occasionally the problem but Magnesium deficiency is more often the source.
Milk is a piss poor source of calcium anyways, Low fat cheeses and yogurts or cashew or almond butter are better sources if you can't find quality supplements.

Calcium Citrate is certainly the most easily absorbed.

When I got cramps from running in my shins area, my doctor always said I had shin splints. He didn't tell me a way to get rid of them. He just said that after awhile I will not notice the pain. I don't go to that doctor anymore.
